Valley to View and Beyond (MTB only) 17km 2-3 hours

This ride climbs steadily for the first 7km on a 4WD road through beautiful native bush. After 4km there is the option for a short side trip to the Skywire area* where you can take in the panoramic views towards Rabbit Island and enjoy a drink or snack on the deck at the Tree Tops Cafe. Return to the main track and pedal on to “Bay View” where as the name suggests, there are stunning views of Cable and Delaware Bays. Climb a fence and wheel your bike a short distance before beginning your descent through Delaware Bay’s 1B farm, land normally inaccessible to the public. The 6km descent will keep you on your toes and is at times steep and rutted. In between gazing at the views, you’ll need to watch your speed over water channels and on the corners. Upon reaching the flat you’ll follow a long line of willow trees out to Maori Pa Road. Pedal a couple of kms on tar seal before returning to Happy Valley where the track joins the Family Loop ride returning you to base.

Awesome adventure ride suitable for Intermediate + riders. Parts of the descent require extreme care. First 4km of track (climbing) shared with walkers.

Valley to View Loop (MTB or hike) 12km 1.5 – 2.5hours ride time.

If the big loop sounds a bit daunting, but you don’t want to miss the view, then this could be the ride for you! Equally this could make for a good half day walk. Ride the first 7km as described above and soak up the special experience that Happy Valley is. Rest up at Bay View and give yourself a pat on the back for making it to the top! Then, instead of descending over Delaware Bay’s 1B farm, return a short distance down on foot before jumping back on your bike and turning right to descend on 4WD drive track, skirting in and out of single track all the way back to base. Walkers can descend on the 4WD track all the way down.

A great day out for adventure minded Intermediate riders or keen walkers. This is a shared trail and care must be taken on the descent where riders cross over the 4WD track.

Family Loop (Bike or Walk)

Time and distance is up to you on the Family Loop, where you can take your bike or head out on foot to support the younger members of your family. This loop of approximately 5km follows the river and is gently undulating in parts. Take your time; stop to skim some stones, admire the big trees or feed the eels.

Good old-fashioned family fun suitable for all ages and abilities. Combine with the Nature or Treetops walks or one of the children’s activities to make for a fun day out. Please take care to supervise children near the river. Be prepared for some wet feet and muddy kids!

Nature Walk (Walk only) 4.6km return

Wander up on 4WD road through native bush to the site where the Noble Lady, NZ’s oldest and largest Matai tree stood, until she fell in last year’s April storm. Check out some other impressive Matai and Totara nearby. Descend the way you came and you’ll have time for the Family loop or to take in one or more of the activities available on the flat.

An achievable and very special walk suitable for the whole family. Please note that you will be sharing this track with mountain bikers (climbing only) between 10am and 12.30pm.

Treetops Walk (Walk only) 8km return

Begin as you would for the Nature Walk but continue gently upwards for a further 1.5kms and then a short steeper section to reach the Skywire* view point. You will be well rewarded for your efforts by panoramic views as far as Rabbit Island. Relax on the deck and enjoy a drink and snack in the Tree Tops Cafe before returning the way you came.

A unique opportunity to check out one of Nelson North’s most stunning views. Suitable for anyone of moderate fitness and for older children who respond to a bit of coaxing! Please note that you will be sharing this track with mountain bikers (climbing only) between 10am and 1pm.

* Skywire rides will be available on the day at a cost of $40pp (min 2pax) on site. Pay cash at the treetops café or back at the office afterwards. Minimum height is 1.2m and all children must be accompanied by an adult. There will be a charge of $55.00 (min 2pax) if transport is needed to get to the Skywire from Happy Valley base.
