Hira School draws on the best of rural school traditions. We encourage our young people to live with integrity, cultivate genuine happiness, and to become confident social and academic learners.
Our dedicated and passionate teachers breathe a love of learning and discovery into students. Children move on from Hira School with life skills to face the future, proud of who they are and where they have come from.
We are committed to delivering high standards of social, academic and emotional learning. Individual needs and strengths are catered for and, across our four, multi-level classrooms, tuakana-teina (older children supporting younger children) occurs naturally and in all facets of school learning. Our size and family-inclusive atmosphere are long-term strengths.
A family/whānau focus is reflected in the high level of parental involvement in school activities. Having many multi-generational families in our area adds to our special connections to the land.
All classrooms have computers, we have a well-resourced library, and our attractive grounds include a solar-heated swimming pool, tennis court, large playing fields and adventure playground.
The creative delivery of a varied school curriculum is a priority. We offer programmes including PMP (Perceptual Motor Programme), Language Nests and the nationally acclaimed ‘Cool School Peer Mediation’ Programme. After school extra-curricular activities currently include music lessons and art. We run whole school marae stays, school camps, inter-school sports events, school concerts and performances, and speech competitions. Every second year our senior students spend a week in Wellington for a jam-packed educational experience.
As an Enviroschool, care for the environment is strongly fostered through student involvement in the school tree nursery, school green house and vegetable garden, community tree planting, school worm farm and regular monitoring of local waterways.
A strong relationship with the local kindergarten and respective families maintains our highly successful transition-to-school programme. We believe a smooth and seamless flow between preschool and school helps a child to settle and succeed.
Our Hira School song says it all: “We’re Hira, Hira – co-operation, courtesy, kindness and respect.”
